Graduation Speech College And The Future After College

Career countdown taught me many things about how I’m going to prepare for college and the future after it. From filling out an application to learning what is offered at the colleges I’m interested in. Career countdown also gave me good ideas on what I would be interested in majoring in after college. In this paper I will tell you want knowledge I have gained throughout the last six weeks of this career countdown class. Interest and ability surveys showed me what kind of person I am like. In the color inventory my top color was orange. Orange means you focus on making a connection with other people and caring more about their feeling than your own at the moment. In the MI assessment survey I scored the most in the category Kinesthetic. Kinesthetic people learn more through body movements and body language. In the RIASEC survey I scored a fourteen in the category enterprising. Enterprising people are risk takers or the ones who make tough decisions. One career that was g iven to me was an agent and business manager of athletics. I agree with this job since I would be interested in since sports is my passion. I looked closely into sales manager since my parents told me I would be good at that major. I’m an active listener and I learn a lot through peoples talking and actions. I do not try to compare myself with others, which I think is the most destructive thing one can do. Every person is unique, and every person has their own strengths and weaknesses. I have always believed that I am my own best friend. And my idea of a best friend is someone with whom I can compete fiercely, and constantly. This means that I am always trying to outdo myself. Each time I reach the peak of my achievement, I would’ve already set my eyes on something higher. And I am relentless in my pursuit of any and every goal I set for myself. This does not mean that I do not revel in my moments of achievement. I give myself the occasional pat on the back. And I think it is essential to do so, because motivation is like the lubricant that keeps the gears of success going. And as an engine with copious amounts of fuel, without a lubricant, eventually grinds to a halt, damaging the engine permanently, without motivation, one’s success may seem to go leaps and bounds in the beginning, but eventually will come to a complete and permanent halt. I have seen many people be deliberately unenthusiastic about their achievements to he outside world. This will eventually lead to a never ending void in us, that no amount of success can fill. Success is a thing to be celebrated, and something hidden from the world is never a celebration. But once again, we must be careful not to let ourselves run amok, as there is a very thin line that separates celebration from extravagance. And extravagance almost always leads to lethargy, dousing the flames of passion and motivation. And that is where the final ingredient in this mechanism of success comes in- hard work. If passion is the fuel and motivation the lubricant that runs the engine of success, then hard work is the spark plug that ignites the mixture, and keeps it burning strong. Without hard work, no great plans of grandeur can come to fruition. I think that a perfect balance of passion, motivation and hard work is what is required to achieve long lasting, tangible success. The statistics on the gastric-bypass procedure, the last resort of people who cannot shed weight in other ways, confirm the sharp rise of obesity in this country. According to the American Society for Bariatric Surgery, in 1992 surgeons performed 7 6,200 of the procedures. In 2002, the number jumped to 63,100 and one year later to 103,200. Gawande, who assisted on the surgery, calls this "among the strangest operations surgeons perform" in th at it "is intended to control a person's will-to manipulate his innards so that he does not overeat." Those who, like Caselli, are morbidly obese and whose weight profoundly reduces their quality of life are turning to the gastric bypass more frequently. Gawande, a surgical resident and also a staff writer for the New Yorker, uses the story of Caselli to "contemplate the human appetite." As such, he provides a fitting and compelling end to the selections in this chapter on obesity (Picador and Gawande, 2002). We don’t take on fancy vacations and we do without a lot of things. Yet because I’m white, I don’t get a hand. Minority students also think that it is a disadvantage being a minority but in reality it can be an advantage against non-minority students. Minority students are what colleges look for. There are scholarships targeted towards minorities, and due to stereotypes there are advantages. These affect more than just minority students, it basically affects everyone because being a non-minority is at a disadvantage of getting a scholarship or getting into a good college. John Brown- A Hero Or Villain? :: essays research papers

What makes a hero or a villain? A hero is defined as a person noted for feats of courage or nobility of purpose, especially one who has risked or sacrificed his or her life. By this definition, there existed countless heroes in America during the 1800’s with relation to slavery. There were many abolitionists, particularly from the North, that exhibited courageous attitudes. It was these heroes that taught the southerners, who believed their lives could only prevail if slavery survived and expanded westward, what they knew was morally right (3, 92). John Brown is one abolitionist who stands out amongst the rest and has been noted as one of the most important men in the process of abolishing slavery. It was Brown’s work that sparked the revolts and fighting that would occur between the North and the South after his time. Brown can be considered a hero on account of his actions in Kentucky and Virginia.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  After the Turner revolt, the topic of slavery took over American politics (3,91). Congressman David Wilmot suggested that legislation prohibit slavery in new territories that were conquered from the victory in a war with Mexico (3,91). Wilmot acted in hopes of stopping slavery’s expansion westward but his movement did not pass with the Senate and was therefore disregarded (3,91). The South’s population was slowly becoming overshadowed by the North’s, leaving little room to stop anti-slavery legislation (3,91). When California was admitted as a free state in 1850, the US was left with no slave state to balance this addition and some southerners desired a separation of slave states from the union (3,92). Congressmen and senators started to fear their political opponents tremendously; tension was slowly building up (3,92). The Compromise of 1850 admitted California as a free state but also passed a law making it painless for slave-owners to recov er their escaped slaves from free states (3,92). Congress then passed the Kansas-Nebraska Act which allowed inhabitants to decide whether Kansas would be a free state or a slave state (3,92). In hopes of victory, the opposing sides invaded the territory which was after nick-named â€Å"Bleeding Kansas† by the easterners (3,92). This unsettled region would be the perfect setting to launch a crusade against slavery (3, 92). How I Learned to Play the Guitar

How I Learned to Play the Guitar Guitar is one of the most popular musical instruments to learn because of its versatility and portability. When I was in high school, I had an abundance of leisure time. I wanted to do something meaningful and fun instead of wasting time on playing video games, so I decided to learn a musical instrument. Honestly speaking, I was a good singer; however, singing without a musical instrument to accompany me seemed strange. That is why I made up my mind to learn to play the guitar.Now I realize that I made a wise decision. To learn to play the guitar, I bought a guitar and a guitar pick. In addition, like playing other instruments, learning to play the guitar requires the love of music, perseverance, and patience. I learned some basic knowledge about the guitar and how to tune it. To illustrate, the neck of the guitar is divided by the strings from the left to the right and by the frets into sections from the top to the bottom. Moreover, every guitar has six strings and each string has a different size and note value.Each time before playing, I need to tune the strings. The tuning process is important for getting the right sound when I play. Next, I began to learn to play the chords, which are made up of different combination of notes. Each time I played the chords, a unique sound was created. The knowledge of the function of the frets and strings helped me identify the chords’ locations easily. There are a lot of chords on the guitar, but I could only memorize the most common chords.I could search for other chords online when I needed them. Now I can play the most important and fundamental five ‘major’ chords. I spend more than 30 minutes every day practicing without looking at the diagram of chords. At first, I strummed the strings slowly to see if all the strings rang clearly. When I could naturally play different chords, I would switch my fingers from one chord to another as quickly and precisely as possible. In this way, I could connect several chords together to make a song.There are many different types of scales, each with different characteristics, note patterns and musical qualities on the guitar. Playing improvisation means playing the scales in different orders. I also learned some techniques to enrich improvising, like mute, vibrato technique, advanced bend and so on. All the different techniques made improvisation fun and diverse. With the encouragement of my professor, I became very enthusiastic about playing the guitar. I carried my guitar everywhere and strummed notes whenever I was free.Before long, my fingertips developed calluses and the pain abated. Also, the more flexible and the stronger my fingers became, the easier I could play the chords. My fingers’ flexibility and strength turned out to be essential for improvisation on the guitar scales. At last, after learning to play the guitar for three months, I could play one of my favorite songs, ‘Time of Your Life’ by Green Day and some other songs with simple tunes. Then I quit my class and decided to learn to play the guitar by myself.Because I knew, practice makes perfect, in order to be a better and more skillful player, I had to practice more. I began to search music scores and videos online, and I followed them to learn new songs. Many uploaded videos on YouTube teach how to play different songs, and I benefited greatly from them. It took me some time to learn a new song, but the process was always fun and enjoyable. Even though I stopped going to the guitar class, I knew what to do and where to go to improve my skills. The most important lesson I learned about playing the guitar is that practice makes perfect.The only way to become a good guitar player is to practice every day. It has been said that professional guitar players practice 8 hours a day, so I knew there was a long way for me to go to become a good player. I am very delighted to say that I can play and sing qui te a few songs at the same time. It has been rewarding to learn to play the acoustic guitar, as it has opened up a whole new universe of expression, conversation and real pleasure. It also has been a great way to make friends, so it was worth making the effort to learn it.

Outline the health and safety policies and procedures of the work setting. Policies and procedures are in place to help protect children and adults within the setting. In the UK early year’s settings must comply with the statutory framework for the Early Years Foundation stage (EYFS). This covers all aspects of the welfare of children in early year’s settings. The ultimate responsibility lies with the manager. Other people within the setting will be in charge other things such as the day to day running , implementation of its policy and practices and specific areas or rooms. A poster showing staff names and their responsibilities will be displayed in the setting on. Everyone has a responsibility to promote safe working practices and maintain a healthy, safe and secure workplace. Policies and procedures along with regulations will ensure people within the setting do this. Within the setting staff will be aware of the person they should report any concerns they have to regarding any health and safety issues. Staff will record any significant information such as medication, incidents or accidents. 1.3 Explain what risk assessment is and how this is managed in the work setting A risk assessment identifies potential risks which could cause harm. Within a setting it would be impossible to prevent every single minor incident however care must be taken to ensure the children within a setting are protected. It is possible to prevent or control most risks. A risk assessment must be taken into consideration for each particular activity or situation and will look at the possible harm or hazard to people or an organization. Settings will implement risk assessments procedures as part of day to day routine. They must ensure proper checks are made. These include checking indoor and outdoor space, materials and equipment. Any trips or outings would also be assessed. They will take note of any hazards. Significant  hazards must be dealt with taking into consideration the number of people who could be involved. Risk assessments take into consideration things which may seem harmless or go unnoticed. Risk assessments look at all different areas of the setting from the equipment within the rooms to the security of the building. For some activities risk assessment may not be necessary each time as they carry low level risk which is unlikely to change however they would still be assessed on a regular basis, such as weekly. If a trip is made outside the setting this must be risk assessed in advance. Within the setting the manager and staff must know who is responsible for carrying out the risk assessments and who is responsible for different areas. They must also understand how the risks assessments will be displayed and how they will be implemented. Outcome 2 be able to recognise risk and hazards in the work setting and during off site visits 2.1. Explain why a safe but challenging environment is important for children and young people It is important for children and young people develop through exploring and trying new experiences. They learn their own limits and must be allowed to push their own level of skill. However they must be supported to ensure this is done in a safe positive environment. Children, unlike adults, have not yet developed the skills and judgment to always make the safe decisions. It is the staff’s responsibility to judge what is safe based on the child’s age and ability. For example a one year old child would not be safe to attempt going down a flight of stairs even though they may try to do so. There will always be a risk however at some point the child must be challenged and learn to walk down the stairs when it is appropriate to the child’s age and ability. If they are not challenged they will grow into an adult who lacked everyday skills and activities. 2.2. Identify the differences between risk and hazard A hazard is described as something which has potential to cause harm and a risk is the likely impact of the hazard associated with the activity. For example a bottle of Milton cleaner is kept in a cupboard within a room at nursery could be a risk; the hazard is that a child could take the cleaner and drink it, however the risk is unlikely to cause harm because the sink cupboard has child safety locks on them. The risk is controlled and a child would not be able to access the cupboard 2.3. Identify potential hazards to the health, safety and security of children or young people in the work setting Every activity and setting carries risk due to hazards. To ensure the children enjoy the full value of the setting or activity hazards and risks should be identified and reduced or eliminated if necessary. The health, security and security of the children or young people are dependent on the actions carried out to minimize the risk of the hazard within setting or off site. In many settings they will have a person who is appointed to deal with health and safety legislation and policies and procedures. Here is a table showing the different types of potential hazards and examples: Outcome 3 Know what to do in the event of a non medical incident or emergency 3.1. Identify non medical incidents and emergencies that may occur in the work setting There are lots of non-medical incidents and non medical emergencies that happen within the setting. Here are some examples: Fire Flood Missing person Unauthorised person in building Water / electric cut Power and heating failure Bomb threat Hazardous spillage Gas leak 3.2. Outline the actions to take in response to the following situations: (a) fires (b) Security incidents (c) emergency incidents Within settings they will have procedures in place to deal with emergency situations. Settings will have drills and practices and everyone will be aware of procedures to follow. Fires Close doors and windows and get the children out of the premises by nearest exit Get the registers / signing in sheets Do not leave children unattended Do not stop to put the fire out Call the fire brigade as soon as possible on 999 Give the operator your telephone number and ask for the fire service Clearly state there is a fire and give the address you are at. Ensure the operator repeats the address The manager will check the building to make sure everyone is out Check registers / signing in sheets to ensure everyone is accounted for Do not enter until it has been confirmed as safe. Security incidents Settings should never have an unknown or unauthorised person within the premises. Logs will be kept for signing in or out of the building and most settings will have secure entrance which requires a code or card to enter. If a person is seen in the building that is unknown they should be asked for identification. If they cannot provide this the manager should be informed. A member of staff should stay with the unauthorised person until the manager comes. Emergency incidents All staff will be aware of procedures for emergencies. Warning signals may need to be triggered immediately, before advising others of the incident. The manager or person in charge should be informed and local services (E.g. Police) contacted if necessary. If needed bring the first aid kit. Contact anyone who will need to be informed e.g. parents. During any emergency everyone should stay calm. Logs should be made of any emergency incidents. Outcome 4 Know what to do in the event of a child or young person becoming ill or injured 4.1 Identify the sign and symptoms which may indicate that a child or young person is injured or unwell SIGNS are changes which can be seen which may suggest illness and diseases†¨SYMPTOMS changes in the body such as feeling sick or having headache Children will normally let you know when they are unwell. They may behave differently or tell you their symptoms such as they feel sick or have pain. They may show obvious signs they are unwell such as vomiting, looking pale or having red cheeks Younger children and babies may not be able to tell you they are unwell. Common signs and symptoms of illness / injury are: †¢ Fever †¢ Loss of appetite †¢ Diarrhea †¢ Vomiting †¢ Constant crying / cries differently †¢ Floppiness / lack of energy †¢ Dry nappies †¢ Seizures. †¢ Breathing difficulties †¢ Cuts / bruises †¢ swelling †¢ Redness / blotchy areas †¢ Rash 4.2. Identify circumstances when children or young people may need urgent medical attention Urgent medical attention should be sought for the following: Difficulty breathing Asthma Attack when inhaler has not worked Floppy / unresponsive child Unconscious child Child is unable to swallow Lips or skin changed colour to grey blue or purple Fits Wounds that will not stop breathing Burns or scalds If after a head injury the child shows confusion / wobbling, headache, vomiting and sight problems Suspicion that a child has meningitis Severe pain Dehydration or lethargic Vomiting blood Frostbite signs Heat exhaustion Consuming poison Raised lumps accompanied by swelling of the mouth or noes Severe vomiting or diarrhea Very high temperature A deep cut which needs stiches or glue Severe bruising Animal bites which break the skin Bites or stings with swelling which make the child ill 4.3. Outline own role and responsibilities in the event of a child or young person requiring urgent medical attention As a member of staff who is training, my main responsibility is to inform a qualified member of staff who would know what to do in an emergency. I would ensure I assisted in any way such as calling for the emergency services or bringing the first aid kit. I would also help reassure any other children in the area. A qualified member of staff is able to confidently carry out any actions required and prevent the effects of the injury or illness becoming worse. If I was alone with a child and unable to get anyone I would stay calm and follow the actions below: Assess the situation – is it safe, who is involved and see what has happened Check the child is breathing – if not take action Ensure any other children in the area are ok Find out what is wrong – call ambulance if necessary Provide immediate first aid Notify parents / carers Talk to the child / children after the incident Outcome 5 Be able to follow the work setting procedures for reporting and recording accidents, incidents, emergencies and illnesses 5.1. Describe the reporting procedures for accidents, incidents, emergencies and illnesses All settings will have their own procedures for recording and reporting incidents, accidents, emergencies and illnesses. Accidents or illnesses If a child is seriously injured, the Health and Safety Executive must be informed. Ofsted define serious injuries as: †¢ Broken bones or a fracture †¢ Loss of consciousness †¢ Pain that is not relieved by simple pain killers †¢ Acute confused state †¢ Persistent, severe chest pain or breathing difficulties †¢ Amputation †¢ Dislocation of any major joint including the shoulder, hip, knee, elbow or spine †¢ Loss of sight (temporary or permanent) †¢ Chemical or hot metal burn to the eye or any penetrating injury to the eye †¢Injury resulting from an electric shock or electrical burn leading to unconsciousness, or requiring resuscitation; or requiring admittance to hospital for more than 24 hours †¢ Any other injury leading to hypothermia, heat induced illness or unconsciousness; or requiring resuscitation; or requiring admittance to hospital for more than 24 hours †¢ Unconsciousness caused by asphyxia or exposure to harmful substances or biological agent †¢ Medical treatment, or loss of consciousness arising from absorbtion of any substance by inhalation, ingestion or through the skin †¢ Medical treatment where there is a reason to believe that this resulted from exposure to a biological agent, or its toxins, or infected material Settings must tell Ofsted and child protection agencies about any serious accidents, injuries, illnesses or death of an adult or child on the premises. The EYFS states: Providers must notify Ofsted and Local Children’s Protection Agencies of any serious accident or injury to, or serious illness of, or the death of, any child whilst in their care, and act on any advice given. An early year’s provider, who, without any reasonable excuse, fails to comply with this requirement, commits an offence Reporting incidents Settings will keep a signed record of all incidents or accidents to the children. The manager will describe which incidents will be recorded. Settings should always include recording for bullying, fighting and any security incidents. The details should be clear and include as much information as possible. This should include details of people involved, people who witnessed it and details of what happened. Outcome 6 be able to follow infection control procedures 6.1. Outline procedures for infection control in own work setting Within the nursery setting we follow rules and advice aimed at preventing the spread of disease and infection. Hand washing and sanitizing is the most important procedure we follow. Both children and staff are encouraged to wash their hands often. Hands are always washed after using the toilet or changing a nappy, before handling or eating food, after messy play or playing outdoors. Soap dispensers, warm water and paper towels are available in all of the rooms. Soap dispensers are used rather than bars of soap as bars of soaps are likely to spread germs. Diagrams showing hand washing procedures are up next to the sink in the staff toilet. Hand sanitizing stations are on the walls at the entrance and in the rooms of the nursery. When changing nappies, staff wears disposable aprons and gloves. After the child has been changed the changing mat is disinfected and wiped down. Dirty nappies are placed in a nappy bag and into a nappy disposal bin which have clinical waste bags in. The bins are emptied at the end of every day and the bags are taken to a secure locked area outside building to await collection. The nursery follows strict rules for food hygiene. For younger children, bottles are sterilized and formula milk is made fresh for each feed. Any  leftover milk at the end of the feed is thrown away. The formula is made up with fresh boiled tap water and cooled in a jug of cold water. The children’s dinner is made on site by another area of the college. The food is transported in a sealed container and taken to the kitchen in the nursery. Whilst food is being served / eaten, staff wear disposable aprons and hair nets. After lunch has been served and eaten the tables are disinfected and the floors are swept and mopped. If anyone in the nursery has sickness or diarrhea, they are not allowed to return to the setting until they have been free from the symptoms for 48 hours. Parents/guardians are advised if there are known cases of infection for example foot and mouth. All the children have their own cups and dummies which are washed regularly to prevent any illness spreading. Th e nursery has cleaners who come in every evening and clean the whole nursery. During the day staff clean as they go and have cleaning Rota’s in place Toys and play areas are cleaned regularly. Spillage packs are also available for vomit / blood / urine etc. The nursery also has laundry facilities for things like blankets, face clothes and bedding. 6.2 Describe personal protective clothing that is used to prevent spread of infection Personal protective clothing includes disposable gloves, masks and single-use disposable plastic aprons. Personal protective clothing is used when coming into contact with body fluids. For example when changing a nappy, cleaning up vomit or dealing with blood. The protective clothing provides physical barriers that prevent potentially infectious materials coming the skin, mouth, nose, or eyes. This can prevent the spread of infection from person to person. Outcome 7 Know the work setting’s procedures for receiving, storing and administering medicines 7.1 Identify the procedures of the work setting governing the receipt, storage and administration of medicines Settings have clear guidelines for receiving, storing and administration of medicine. When receiving medication parents must give written permission and inform staff of any medicine already given to the child. The parents must also be informed of any medicine which has been administered. The settings will implement policies which include: †¢What medication they will administrate – E.g. only prescribed or needed on a regular basis †¢Procedures for who will administer medication – all staff or only the manager †¢Storage of medicine – safe, appropriate place out of reach of children †¢Recording administration of the medication – time needed, time given etc. †¢Training for staff (including specialist training for medical need) †¢Action to take if a child becomes ill or has a long standing condition 7. 2 Explain how the procedures of the work setting protect both children and young people and practitioners. Procedures within the work setting protect children, young people and practitioners. Procedures ensure everyone is aware of the process which must be followed for example how to correctly receive, store and administer medicine. Giving medicine must be given correctly because if it not it could result in taking too much medicine or something the child is allergic to. This could be harmful towards the child. Procedures make sure it is clear for everyone who needs to be aware of allergies and medications. Communication with parents to ensure dosage and times for medicines are known and documented. All staff must follow the strict policies to protect themselves against allegation or incorrectly administering. If procedures are not followed staff may face dismissal, especially if a child ends up very ill.

JK Rowling, who’s the author of the now-famous Harry Potter series, initially faced a lot of hurdles. The idea of Harry Potter was turned down by several publishers. Her speech at Harvard University was around the very idea of the benefits of failure. She said in clear words that what she feared most at a young age was not poverty, but failure. JK Rowling said that she felt extremely sad when she was suffering from failures, but she believes that those very failures helped her strip away the inessential. She took a lesson out of her own life and wrote a beautiful speech, she told everyone that we don’t need magic to change the world because everything we need is already inside us. Especially the power of imagination. Jim Carrey gave the commencement speech at Maharishi University and, as expected, it went viral. In his speech he told everyone that even if someone plans their life safely, they can still fail, so it’s better to go big or go home. Jim then tells a tale about his own father wanting to become a comedian but decided to go about life in a financially secure manner and ended up being an accountant. His father played it safe but he was fired and the family ended up being extremely poor anyway. David Foster gave an everlasting speech at the graduation ceremony of Kenyon College. His speech became so iconic that it was translated into various forms of literature. The author put his own imagination and experiences in the speech by telling everyone that they are all part of a gigantic and constantly changing interaction of life forms. David emphasized on the point that it is important to step out of our comfort zones and interact with others, even if it’s extremely unpleasant, to truly experience life. David suffered from depression and his life-story ended on a very bleak note but this speech may have been his answer to everyone who felt like him. Comedian Stephen Colbert gave a terrific speech at Northwestern University that was full of improvisation and humor. His entire speech was surrounded around the emphasis that life cannot be planned. And where did he get such good material to talk about? His own life. Mr. Colbert told the young graduates that life is good at throwing curve balls on a daily basis. According to him, the most successful people are those who can improvise and deal with life on-the-go. He gave examples out of his own life as well, telling people that life is just like improv-comedy. You don’t know what’s next, but you roll with the punches. Admiral William H McRaven gave one of the most iconic speeches at the University of Texas at Austin which was based entirely upon his own life experiences. The Admiral refers to the advantages of various routines that are forced upon new navy recruits. He tells people that every morning in basic SEAL training, every time the instructors came in the barracks in the morning they would inspect the bed. According to him, this mundane task seemed unnecessary at the time but eventually proved to be beneficial to him. If we all make our bed every morning, we will feel a sense of accomplishment. This one task completed will start a chain reaction of completion of various other tasks throughout the day. Simply putting it, he said everything that he achieved in his life was because he believed that if little things can’t be done properly, the bigger ones won’t be done at all. Kurt Vonnegut gave the commencement speech at Agnes Scott College and talked about how important it is to never worry about the small things that happen in life. Once again it’s evident that a very well-constructed and inspirational speech was given while keeping personal life in perspective. Mr. Kurt told the youngsters that in order to live a happy life, one must learn to let things go. He simply told the kids that you shouldn’t expect people to forgive you if you yourself don’t have the capacity to forgive others. He emphasized on the point that it is extremely unhealthy to live your life while having a personal vendetta in your heart. Neil Gaiman gave a commencement speech at the University of the Arts. As Mr. Gaiman is well-known for his work in various literary mediums including journalism, novels and comic books, he decided to make a speech on how distracting the success can be. He told everyone how his success forced him to deviate from his work and that instead of replying to a plethora of fan-mails he should have written more. His message was that no matter how much success you attain; you should never let people stand in the way of the things you love to do. Barack Obama gave an impressive keynote speech at the 2004 Democratic National Convention. The core theme of this speech was all about how anyone, if dedicated enough, can beat the odds. He talked about his own life where he never had the support or the confidence of his peers that he would make it this far. Four years later he became the president of the United States of America. Play Snowball Fight to Break the Ice or Review Lessons Theres probably nothing more fun than a snowball fight, particularly at school. This paper snowball fight doesn’t send icy shivers down the neck of your jacket or sting your face. It’s just an effective icebreaker designed to let students get to know each other or help you review a particular lesson or specific content. This game works with a group of at least a dozen people. It can also work well with a very large group, such as a lecture class or club meeting. You can use the icebreaker with students individually or divide into them into groups. General Steps Gather paper from your recycle bin, so long as one side is blank, then follow these steps. Have students: Write  one sentence or question- the content depends upon the context- on a piece of paper.Ball up their paper.Throw their snowballs.Pick up someone elses snowball and read the sentence aloud or answer the question. Using the Activity as a Mixer If you use the paper snowball fight to help students become acquainted, give them one piece of paper each and ask them to write their name and three fun things about themselves, such as, Jane Smith has six cats. Alternatively, write questions to be answered by the reader, for example, Do you have pets? Have them crumple the paper into a snowball. Divide the group into two teams on opposite sides of the room and let the snowball fight begin. You can have players write appropriate questions, or write the questions yourself to avoid any embarrassment and speed the process. The second alternative is particularly effective with younger students. When you say, Stop, each student should pick up the nearest snowball and find the person whose name is inside. Once everyone has found their snowman or snowwoman, have them introduce him to the rest of the group. For Academic Review To use the icebreaker to review content of a previous lesson or for test preparation, ask students to write a fact or question regarding the topic you want to review. Provide each student with several pieces of paper so there is abundant snow. If you want to ensure that students cover certain issues, add some snowballs of your own. Use this icebreaker in a wide range of contexts and for many different purposes. For example: Write review facts on snowballs and have students read them aloud, such as, Mark Twain was the author of Huckleberry Finn. Write review questions on snowballs and have students answer them, for example, Who wrote Huckleberry Finn? Write conceptual questions for students to answer, such as, What is the role of the character of Jim in Huckleberry Finn? When the snowball fight is over, each student will pick up a snowball and answer the question in it. If your room can accommodate this, have students remain standing during this exercise since they’ll be picking up snowballs throughout the activity. Moving around also helps people retain learning, and it’s a great way to energize a classroom. Post-Activity Debriefing Debriefing is necessary only if you’re recapping or prepping for a test. Ask questions such as: Were all the topics covered?Which questions were the hardest to answer?Were there any that were too easy? Why is that?Does everybody have a thorough understanding of the subject?
